Absent from this argument is any mention of counter-revolutionary violence and the spread of the virus. The socialist movement must demand an investigation, beginning with the acknowledgement of scientific reports, into biological weapons programs as a source of the virus. This could also simplify the search for a vaccination. The public knowledge that exists about illegal spying programs combined with the information in the above link about the virus’s origins lends credibly to the argument that the government has not only stood by during the spread of the virus.

The government actively encouraged the spread of the virus and placed obstacles in the way of a medical response. The hundreds of thousands of deaths would not seem out of line with arguments about the governments’ ethics if one considers that over 500,000 soldiers died before slavery ended and tens of millions of soldiers died before the Nazi government, responsible for the massacre of 12 million civilians using poison gas, lost its grip on power. That level of intentional death, while deeply tragic, must not come as a surprise. We must open our eyes to the real threats arising from the economic and political crisis of global capitalism.

Forty-one percent of Americans, and 66 percent of millennials, cannot say what Auschwitz was. And 52 percent of Americans wrongly think Hitler came to power through force.”

This level of ignorance, like Hitler’s rise to power, depends on the acquiescence of the socialist movement. A direct confrontation with the forces responsible cannot occur as long as denial is the order of the day. The WSWS, if it does not have time for all the publicly available scientific research, should at least pose these questions. Does the virus have laboratory origins? What scientific reports argue that they do? What evidence do you have to contradict these reports? The decision to stay quiet on such issues can only occur from bureaucratic degeneration of the party, of the type which allowed Hitler to take the power without a battle with the working class. (German Stalinism conquered the workers’ resistance by arguing that the revolution must wait until after the fascists broke up the republic and then the fascist government fell. Then and only then could the workers offer up a resistance to the capitalist class. In fact, the Stalinists received East Germany after WWII as a reward for their efforts.)
