#MeToo Defends Epstein Victims, WSWS Attacks

In the present case, not a peep had been heard from #MeToo about Ghislaine Maxwell since her arrest more than 18 months ago until the movement’s Chief Vision Officer Tarana Burke and Chief Executive Officer Dani Ayers issued a joint press statement on December 1 expressing support for the Epstein accusers in the trial, who had already begun taking the witness stand two days earlier.

According to the MeToo website, the #MeToo hashtag was tweeted 12 million times in 24 hours. This shows that the attempt to narrow it down to a few officers willfully ignores the history and substance of the argument. The press statement from these officers also follows in the same pattern as their previous press statements, as a response to resignations or decisions by the court. The main purpose of their organization does not include the publication of a newspaper to respond to events as they occur.

The confusion of the WSWS, mistaking MeToo for a revolutionary socialist party goes a long way towards explaining their own betrayal of the spontaneously conscious mass movement of the working class. There are few parties focusing exclusively on socialist revolution, and they should be protected from censorship as well as encouraged or forced to serve their purpose as revolutionary parties. However, we cannot replace the struggle for a revolutionary party by turning groups such as MeToo into Marxist parties. This short-cut view of the revolution shows that the Nanobureaucracy no longer sees the SEP as a revolutionary party and now acts as a look-out to warn of future possibly revolutionary organizations. Democratic Power takes the position that the reign of the Nanobureaucracy over the Fourth International will not last much longer, and everything must be done to appeal to the membership to save the party from self-destruction, as occurred with the ISO and the Spartacist League.

While the #MeToo officers write of “the survivors bravely sharing their stories in the Ghislaine Maxwell trial,” and how “abusers will use their power and influence to attempt to discredit survivors and diminish the harm they caused,” the names of Jeffrey Epstein and the entourage of wealthy and powerful individuals who participated with him in the sexual abuse of teenage girls are not even mentioned.

This position of the WSWS contradicts its own history of statements on the MeToo movement, which without any explanation for the discrepancy, shows remarkably little consideration for their own audience. The WSWS made its central argument that of “Due Process” and “No Trial by Media!” Now, MeToo, which has only responded to accomplished facts in court, supposedly made a mistake by not including a list of names associated with Jeffrey Epstein whom the court has not charged. The entire purpose of the press release was to show solidarity with the victims and accusers, but the WSWS only wants to portray them as vindictive. The victims were poor and working class, but the WSWS argues they are all middle class careerists with ulterior motives for accusing Epstein in court. This misrepresentation of the facts shows the gaping hole in their theory, which rests upon conscious opposition to Lenin on the concept of spontaneous consciousness as described in What is to Be Done.
