Jennifer Lawrence is not a pot-smoker, and only turned against the Republican party after the election of Trump. Technically speaking, that does not mean she should not act in the role, but we should see the irony of her association with the Hunger Games and Don’t Look Up. Hollywood wants us to believe they know how we feel and sympathizes with our “hopeless” situation. We need to remember that whatever their contributions to objective art, they oppose our victory and they work at the expense of our artists’ suffering in poverty.
Don’t Look Up makes a parody of the government but also of the revolution. We will not be heard even appearing on television news. Saving ourselves will only lead to our destruction. Remember that the DSA only a short time ago made open their homicidal thoughts about Trotskyism. The movie’s arguments, with a DSA member screenwriter, follow along the same lines. Their exclusion of Trotskyist ideas harms their ability to reach the audience and the new argument then seems frivolous.
Perhaps an artist may see a balance between the government and revolution, but if they do not take the side of the revolution then, in an age of censorship and persecution, we need a political response. The people need the WSWS to argue that the revolution has not been isolated, and to affirm that the DSA Trotsky-killers will not gain a hearing. This is an uphill battle, because the bourgeoisie will spend a vast sum to divert a left turn against the Trotskyist movement. Nevertheless, we have seen significant gains and expect many more, including winning an election for political office, appearances on major networks, and meetings with influential people. This may all seem futile, but only to someone like McKay who seeks to trap the people within the Democratic Party while calling for brutality against Trotskyism. To us, all their television appearances are in vain and their rule must come to an end anyway.
