I met and worked with Jim Lawrence during the 2004 campaign, in which he was the vice presidential candidate. He made a great impression on me, and I remember him to his day. As a result of the split in the SEP, I never had a chance to renew contact. The SEP Nanobureaucracy has banned communication between members of the SEP and used a combination of professional negligence, slander, and plagiarism in order to control the party and eliminate inner-party democracy. As a result, Jim Lawrence’s supporters scattered and could not reunite, leading to a collapse in support for the SEP. Furthermore, after the campaigns, Bill Van Auken received an invitation to appear on Conservative Independent Glenn Beck’s show on CNN in front of a national audience of millions. Without any vote among the campaign staff, Van Auken rejected the invitation on spurious grounds. The absence of discussions and votes and the concurrent “indefinite suspension” of my membership without the right to appeal, has since characterized the never-ending campaign against the Democratic Power Faction, supporters of Jim and David Lawrence, (Jim’s son) the SEP membership, and the advanced working class carried out by the Nanobureaucracy of the SEP. The death of Jim Lawrence accompanies our great disappointment in supposedly Leninist leadership giving in to political police policies to criminalize socialism and bureaucratize the leadership of the world revolution. Lawrence ran for office as a professional revolutionary who asked what his professional responsibility was to the organization. We should continue his work in this spirit, and allow for the official recognition of the Democratic Power Faction and its right to organize an opposition within SEP Party Congresses.
