WSWS sees Marxism as “devoid of credible facts,” it “defies all political logic.” In fact, Marxism argued long ago that capitalism reaches its highest stage in Imperialism. Russia’s capitalist state does not arise out of a narrative concocted by Biden. It has economic, material causes and arose historically from the development of world capitalism. Only bourgeois scholarship can concoct a story in which a capitalist state does not need to participate in imperialism. Arguments that capitalist states have a choice, that Russian capitalism has found a non-imperialist way, has its roots in reformism. This has to do with the idealist perspective guiding the WSWS internal party politics. The SEP must produce a financial report, declaring its leaders’ assets. Bourgeois scholars do not belong in executive positions within the workers’ movement. If this occurred as a result of a special case, an emergency, back in the 80s, we now have to declare that emergency resolved. Membership rights, associated with mass participation for the working class within the party’s internal politics, the Left Opposition, and even Trotsky’s view of the party before he joined the Bolsheviks in 1917, now represent the main concern for the party. As materialists, we see that a Nanobureaucracy, and bourgeois scholarship based on New York socialists modeled after Norman Thomas, have definite social interests with regard to the revolutionary working class and the new workers’ state. Disregarding this conflict will disarm the workers and prevent a socialist consciousness from taking shape. The workers must see themselves as their own liberators, rather than awaiting rescue from a bourgeois authority figure, a formidable image devoid of real socialist theory.
