In opposition to Lenin’s theory of Imperialism, in which Lenin argued that Imperialism represented “Reaction all down the line,” the WSWS has returned to Kautsky’s theory of social chauvinism and class compromise. Internal tensions produced by the class divide under capitalism cannot be massaged in and out as the WSWS claims. The internal “tensions” (what Marxism describes as a class conflict that often leads to war) increase under Imperialism and turn to reactionary extremes. The position of Marxism since Lenin has been to call for the defeat of one’s own government and for turning the imperialist war into a revolutionary war. Lenin’s conflict with Kautsky ended with Kautsky voting for war credits for the Kaiser and later murdering Luxemburg and Liebknecht to defend the Weimar Republic, which would hand the power over to Hitler. Lenin went on to found the Third International and the first workers’ state. The WSWS wants to eliminate the class conflict so as to set the world on fire using an imperialist conflict. We cannot support this vision or the underlying perverted theory of internal and “channeled” tensions over the Marxist theory of class conflict. The socialist movement must fight for the Leninist perspective throughout the whole preparatory period for the coming imperialist conflict in order to form a movement capable of taking the power.
