The world needs to plant 3 trillion trees to restore the planet to its condition 12,000 years ago. Mankind has destroyed half the world’s forest without replacing it. Nearly 70% of the world’s wildlife has been lost since 1970. A world government, chosen by the first worldwide election, could accomplish this reversal in 10 years. Furthermore, desertification and deforestation have devastated much of the world’s livable habitats. An example of a large project, impossible under capitalism, would be to irrigate the desert, starting with pumping large amounts of ocean water into below sea level or near sea level areas combined with dams. The salt water would support mangroves, which grow sour apples and other edible plants that could be processed into food on a large scale. In general, a new revolution in production would create a system that protects against exploitation of both labor and the environment. Every generation, through sustainable, planned production, would leave behind a planet better suited to support natural life in all its diversity. The rate of destruction under capitalism proves that destruction of resources has come to dominate the means by which private fortunes accumulate those resources. “Give it to me, or I will destroy it,” the capitalists all say. Only the destruction and forced appropriation of excessive private fortunes will release the pent up demand for public property and public works projects.
