Even if Netanyahu wins an election and returns to the Prime Minister position, he will continue to face trial. If found guilty, which could take as long as the end of 2024, he would lose the Prime Minister position. The rational decision for Likud, then, would be to remove Netanyahu from his position within the party. In 2019, Netanyahu won an election of the general membership of the Likud Party against challenger Gideon Sa’ar. By leaving Netanyahu at the top of the Likud Party, Likud has set up a never-ending crisis for the Israeli state, leading to numerous elections within a short period. A new election in 2022 or 2023, if the ruling coalition loses one more member, could bring Netanyahu into power, only to remove him again within a year after a verdict against him. Dependence for political power on such a liability stems from the large debt Israel has incurred for its imperialist policy involving crimes against humanity, its dependence on the worn out US military´s supplies and support, and its dependence on a military draft that puts the entire population at risk of losing family members for an illegal occupation rejected by almost the entire world. This debt is not entirely off the books, and the time is coming for a settlement of the debts.
