Bags of Cash and 5,000 Women: A Role-Model for Bourgeois Political Leadership

In the latest #MeToo controversy, the former King of Spain, Juan Carlos will need to appear before a British High Court after a former mistress alleged spying and harassment. The alleged incident occurred after she ended her affair with the former King, who then forced her to return €65 million he had transferred to her account during their relationship. She revealed some of the details about their affair in a recent podcast.

As a result of this incident, the former King needed to accept testosterone-blocker injections and estrogen injections as a way of controlling his “sex addiction.” He often arrived with bags full of cash, the Danish-German businesswoman, philanthropist, and Princess revealed, and other expensive gifts, but the former mistress has not named any specific friends behind these gifts. This Princess by marriage, Corinna Larson zu San-Wittgenstein-San, arranged the €40,000 elephant trip during which Juan Carlos broke his hip. This occurred during the period of austerity when many Spanish people were suffering from the effects of the 2008 market collapse. This trip, a case of his ex-son-in-law receiving no-bid contracts (convicted in 2018 and separated in 2022), and other problems revealed by the Panama Papers in 2016, brought the Spanish King down in 2014. His son, the heir, remains the King but has barred his visits to the palace and renounced the inheritance of his fortune.

In 2007, the ex-King gained international media attention and a following in the t-shirt industry, by asking Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez at a summit, “Why Don’t You Shut Up?” In 2005, Pat Robertson, a famous evangelical preacher, called for Chavez’s assassination. Chavez died in office in 2013.

We must expose the role of the WSWS in defending the royal family, not only Juan Carlos of Spain but also Prince Andrew of the UK, in its decision to fight a political war against all #MeToo accusations. It also defended the Spanish state by opposing a vote for Catalan independence, protecting the right of the monarchy to rule over Spanish and non-Spanish alike. Socialists must stand against government spying, harassment, and the sexual conquest of 5,000 women through the disbursement of public funds with “gifts” on the order of tens of millions of Euros. It must stand against the nationalism of large imperialist states and defend nationalism of smaller nations seeking independence and just compensation for their historic oppression. It must stand against the assassination of popular leaders in underdeveloped former colonies.

Can we really trust the government not to spy on the socialist movement when they spy on the King’s lovers so they can dictate personal decisions about money? That the WSWS would take the fall for the royal family shows us the inseparability of the Nanobureaucracy from the most reactionary elements of the state, as with their love affair with Pentagon Contractor Dr. Peter Daszak. We can see why the ICFI has failed to construct a party in Spain through the worst economic crisis since before WWII, through the formation of the Podemos Party, through endless political crisis for the capitalist state. Only a revolutionary perspective based on Leninism and Trotskyism, based on an uncompromising opposition to the capitalist state, based on an unswerving determination to bring about its final destruction and a thorough criticism of its very origins, only such a perspective can create the basis for the growth of revolutionary politics in Spain and the Spanish-speaking world.
