The Green/Democrat Duopoly: Its Origins and How to Fight It

The struggle on the left drags on between those who appreciate and discuss Marxist theory along with organizing and those who seek a pure form of organizing without any ideology. The purpose of that latter position becomes clear in their new theorem: the only alternative to the Democratic-Republican Duopoly is a Green-Democratic Duopoly. This creates the groundwork for a philosophical and political absolutism: “the most moral platform.” Such absolutism is characteristic of theocracy, which explains the theocratic element in the writing of Hedges and West. An administration based on their leadership would not lead to socialism. Their role in the current election is not even to create an administration but block the development of a conscious socialist movement of the working class. Our best hope is in the new political messiah offered up by the media as the only one with a chance. The left in modern politics is not just left but as left as possible. Nothing more can be done for the people. Meanwhile the top positions go to millionaires and Ivy Leaguers whose connection to the people is patriarchal if not outright slavery, the ownership by the political leader of the political volunteer or constituent.

Setting aside the excessive pride necessary to offer oneself as the new messiah of “evangelical socialism” through the corporate media and through a political appointee, outside the control of the people themselves, a real-world messiah, a savior for the world, would have to create real miracles, i.e., prove that what we believe is impossible is actually possible. Instead, they seek to reinforce a mythology that benefits the ruling class, that a break from capitalist politics and a turn towards socialist revolution is impossible because of the inherent weakness or dumbness of the working class. The reality is far more complicated. The active intervention of the clergy, of the middle class, and of the police and military protect the ruling class as a ruling class and keep the workers down as a lower, wage-slave class.

As a consequence of fully accepting this mythology, they seek an alternate road to socialism and responsible government. Marxists need to tell the whole truth to the people and trust them to emancipate themselves. The capitalist system creates intolerable conditions but at the same time depends on human labor. Human labor cannot continue to exist without the socialist movement, a socialist government, and socialist programs. The socialist revolution is already a real and powerful force, but it can only turn into an openly mass movement through the work of a revolutionary socialist party. West’s “United Front” is designed to prevent just that.

Therefore, Democratic Power proposes a second demand from Cornel West before accepting the “United Front.” We want a group formed to establish a Black Nationalist Faction of the ICFI to add to the program the resolution for a referendum on independent black nationalist-Marxist states. The ICFI does not allow any factions except one and distorts the original program of the Fourth International. It uses these distortions to expel anyone who defends the original program. That faction should lose the executive positions in the party as well as the ownership rights to the party and paper. New factions should form to prepare a free, fair election. If Cornel West can support this process, then we can support his United Front. Unfortunately, the structure of the PP and SEP is exactly the same: a privately held corporation with a majority owner. For that reason, the workers themselves must act to bring about these results, because West and North have too much to lose.
