I am taking an education class in which the psychological theories of Left Oppositionist and Trotsky supporter Lev Vygotsky, killed by Tuberculosis in 1934 and censored and suppressed by Stalinism, is treated centrally and respectfully.

It’s always been that way with Vgotsky.. he was dug up by Western psychologists and they love him. His writings are interesting. “Casual Dynamics.” His word for Dialectics I guess. Sticks with me. Don’t think he was really a left oppositionist. He wasn’t purged… but silenced like a lot of men of science and the arts.

Is TJM your username? I tried to add you as an author, but it said TJM and TJMCG were not found. Can you send me your email either as a comment or to randomposter33@yahoo.com? As an author you could write and edit your own posts.
I am also hoping you invite other wsws.org commentary writers to participate if their posts were removed without explanation.

Political label aside – how is your thinking about how children learn developing thanks to your understanding of Vygotsky’? What have you learned so far? How does it change the way you think about learning and teaching?

The teachers emphasized Vygotsky’s theory that education would benefit most from the creation of a social environment and social groups designed to encourage or motivate the students to learn. I believe it to be the reasoned response to the natural inclination towards authoritarianism, even in education, e.g. re-education camps, of a new government. It reminds me of what I learned about Thomas Jefferson’s view that universities should be places where students associate freely, form classes, and invite the teachers they chose. Unfortunately, Stalin suppressed much of Vygotsky’s writing and it is hard to find. That Vygotsky is taught tells me that teaching, learning, and public schools will forever remain inseparable and dependant upon revolutionary and socialist movements and history.
Do you have any links to Vygotsky’s actual writing? Any full-text books?
