In addition, the same forces that built the ISO have not forgotten about the SEP, and they will attempt to influence the SEP in similar ways. For this reason, the ICFI should provide a detailed financial report (even if slightly redacted) to the public as part of its fund-raiser drive. This should be obvious and part of every non-profit or political organization’s normal routine. Perhaps another report should be written and distributed to members that provides details about the assets, income, and expenditures of all board members to insure that they maintain an essentially proletarian life-style based on the income of an average worker.

Fat chance. As a former branch finance officer, I watched the financial aspects of the party become increasingly opaque to *members*. I will not go into the “lifestyles” of party leadership except to note that some do not have to make the same painful budgetary choices that most rank and file do when it comes to dues and such. There are members who truly sacrifice, and leadership who travel the world regularly in comfort.

This represents the pressure of class forces on the party. The intra-party situation requires an intra-party program as a solution, based on the Declaration of the 46, the founding document of the Left Opposition, written in 1923 while Lenin still lived. An analysis, based on your testimony and others, should be written and distributed to membership. This should include a summary of the external forces working on the party, such as national self-determination, opposition to imperialist courts, and inter-party discord which threatens to break out into military conflict or the politicalization of the military. Such forces give enormous import to the work of the party, but the nano-bureaucracy cannot force itself, against its very nature, to take the side of the working class and the world revolution. Only constant, unrelenting pressure will force them to open the gates for the workers.

This seems pertinent not only to the ISO financial meltdown, but more recently, to the National Rifle Association leadership revelations.

  2. While such a report would seem necessary and prudent, it will not happen. Any such as myself who speak ill of their time in the party, or of any problems or disagreements they have had are quickly labeled (as I have documented) as anything from “opportunist” to “coming under the influence of alien class forces”. Rather than examining concerns in a comradely manner, moves to excise are taken.

    1. The class force behind your concerns arises from the working class, its prudence and necessity. The class force in opposition to your proposals, must therefore be the alien force. A refusal to report on the leadership to the membership reveals nothing less than a constant coverup of oppportunism.

The best approach would not limit itself to appeals to individual members. The best approach would include a Declaration, like the founding document of the Left Opposition. The Bolsheviks, by then, numbered in the millions of people, but the Left Opposition only had the signatures of 46. Yet the class position they represented based itself on the interests of the working class, as an international class, and the peasants, as a dispossessed, undervalued class.

The state bureaceacy and the labor aristocracy, to which the SEP leaders orient their analysis, cannot suppress the workers’ revolution without doing harm to the class-orientation of the leadership of the revolutionary party. A loyalist faction could force these issues into debate, as we saw with the NRA, forcing a re-orientation back to working class positions. Professionalism on one side, self-dealing on the other, will provide the dividing line to distinguish between the class forces.

    2. This should come to the attention of other national parties and receive an investigation and report from the IC itself. If Detroit cannot handle this problem professionally, then the center may need to shift elsewhere.
