The committee cannot force anything on the employer through the courts. In the short term, the committee would make pronouncements, followed by organization of demonstrations or work stoppages. Finally, the committee would serve as the basis for a new state, since any action organized by the committee would bring a reaction from the state. The first part, however, is most important. The pronouncements will reach the workers, and when a confrontation comes between workers and employers, everyone will know to turn to the committee for leadership and its program for their demands. One of these demands that will not come from the union could be: a return to the 8-hour day!

  1. This is an ongoing problem with the Party. There have been periods of growth within ranks (the BART strike earlier this century), but they have never revealed – even to party members – how many people are actually on board. As well, I don’t even know how many branch meetings I sat through whereat the “contacts” section was not full of “haven’t had a chance to reconnect” and “they seem not to be answering” when it came to people who’d written in to the site or had been met while leafleting or contact made online by infiltration of union groups.

There has also been no *sustained* work within unions (Ye Devyl, according to dogma) or workplaces, and no actual committees set up with any pull within the US or Europe. The majority of activity remains on the university campuses, which, while important, is still largely isolated from the working class.

    1. From my experience, the university work would not function without some spontaneous activity on the part of students.

Just to be clear, do you mean that many contacts wrote in or approached during leafleting and told you that no one from the party would maintain contact? Are you sure it wasn’t those newer people who broke off contact?

If that is true, then an investigation would be in order to find out how this decision was made, and what steps the party must take to overcome this political irresponsibility or professional negligence or potentially gross negligence and fraud. The party must act responsibly towards new members and potential new members or they risk committing fraud against the membership. The leaders of the party absolutely have that responsibility, and if they deny that responsibility, then they absolutely must admit to their guilt.
